Dear colleagues,
The results are in: our membership has voted and we are endorsing Representative Mikie Sherrill for governor of New Jersey. Of the 203 members who voted in the referendum, 83% voted yes, 17% no.
We have a vital interest in this election. On November 4, we are electing the person who will make funding and policy decisions for the State University of New Jersey. It is critically important that we have a governor who opposes the federal attacks on our university. And the outcome of this will also have national repercussions. A victory for Republican Jack Ciattarelli will serve to embolden MAGA’s attacks on the Constitution.
We want to get organized right away to make certain Sherrill wins. There are a number of upcoming campaign events to plug into:
- AFT Day Labor Walk in North Brunswick – Saturday, October 18, meet at 8:30 a.m., IBEW 456 Hall (1295 Livingston Ave., North Brunswick) – Join our labor-to-labor canvassing for Sherrill at a labor walk hosted by the Middlesex/Somerset County Central Labor Council and New Jersey AFL-CIO; please recruit co-workers and friends to join us! Spend the morning canvassing and then head to the No Kings Day demonstration in Highland Park. Click here if you can make it.
- Volunteers Needed for Text-Banking – Tuesday Evenings from 6-8pm through Election Day – If you are looking for a way to help remotely, our union along with the Central Labor Council will participate in weekly text banks. We’re looking for more volunteers to sign up to do this easy GOTV work from the comfort of their own homes. Click here and we’ll tell you how to join.
And don’t forget what you can do on campus!
- Make sure our students know that TOMORROW, October 14 is the deadline to register to vote. We’ve compiled a list of online voting resources; please share the URL (https://rutgersaaup.org/important-info-about-voting-in-new-jerseys-november-election/). You can also click here to download a slide (in pdf, ppt, and jpg formats) to show when students are arriving for class; the QR code will guide them to the voting information.
Lastly, to hear about canvassing and phone-banking plans in the coming weeks, click here to sign up for the broadcast-only Joint Legislative Committee News listserve.
In solidarity,
The Executive Board of the Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union
